HOLIDAY– We will be closed Monday, October 14th for Columbus Day.
SOCKTOBER– Socktober is here!! Please bring in new socks for men, women and children and place them in the designated box in Wesley Hall. Donations will go to SouthPark, StreetFire, the VA Hospital, Winsted, Gifts of Love and Build Kits. Last year we collected over 1,000 pairs. Let’s see if we can beat that number this year.
UPCOMING SUNDAYS– We have the following events coming up in the month of October: Oct. 20th – Laity Sunday and Oct. 27th – Bible Sunday. Revival Sunday has been postponed until the Spring.
DONATIONS FOR INCINERATOR FOR NEW CLINIC IN KENYA– We have received a request from our partner and friend, Pastor Kennedy Mwita from Kenya for donations for an incinerator. The incinerator is needed so that they can open a clinic, which has been completed in their village. The amount required is $3,000.00. Unfortunately, this emergency cannot be addressed with Days for Girls funds, but most likely, is not beyond the reach of our church. If you would like to lend your support to this mission, please make a donation so they can get this clinic open as soon as possible. They were hoping for an October opening. Checks can be made out to SUM with “Clinic” in the memo line and placed in the offering plate. Also, a collection box will be available in Wesley Hall today. Thank you so much for your support. Jan Baker
CHANCEL CHOIR– If you’re interested in singing with the Chancel Choir but can’t make the weekly commitment, please consider joining one of our “Choir Plus” weeks. During the third week of most months, we invite singers to come to our Thursday night rehearsal from 7:20 – 8:00 p.m. and then sing with the Chancel Choir on that Sunday. There’s no weekly commitment and no robes, but an opportunity to sing some great choral repertoire with some fantastic singers. Our first “Choir Plus” week will include a rehearsal on Thursday, October 17th to prepare for the 10:30 service on October 20th. Please see Bridget Scarlato or any Chancel Choir member for more convincing!!
REPRESENT SUM LOVE– We are looking for volunteers to help out in our booth at the Simsbury Spooktacular Chili Challenge on Sunday, October 20th from 12-5 p.m. at Simsbury Meadows. This will be a high traffic event and a fun way to show the community our special brand of fun and fellowship. Please see Deacon Deb or email her to join in this opportunity.
SOUTH PARK AND SUM: STILL COOKIN’ AFTER ALL THESE YEARS - SUM has been providing meals to South Park Inn, a homeless shelter in Hartford, for over 22 years! After the 10:30 service on Sunday, October 20, we will serve the congregation the meatloaf meal that we serve to the residents of South Park. It’s delicious. We will share more about SUM’s South Park ministry and we’re hoping to have South Park’s new Executive Director join us. In lieu of donating food items, please consider donating items from South Park’s wish list such as men’s and women’s underwear, laundry detergent or coffee. Since we are shopping for all the food at once, we are making bulk purchases, which reduces costs and the number of car trips. We can provide 120 meals for about $300.00. Naturally, we do need financial donations. If you would like to donate, please put South Park on the envelope or on the memo field of your check. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Come enjoy some fellowship while peeling carrots and baking cookies. If you would like to help transport the meals and/or serve, let us know. For more information see Mike and Sue Sames or email them.
KISSS RETURNS TO SUM – KISSS, an acronym for Knit, Inspire, Sew, Stamp and Scrap returns to SUM on Saturday, October 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Wesley Hall. Join us for a day of crafting, working on sewing or scrapbook projects or even sorting paperwork as well as fellowship and food! Please bring a dish to share and a suggested donation of $25.00 to go toward a SUM ministry. Breakfast munchies, lunch, dinner and snacks are provided throughout the day. Consider bringing a lamp with you to use for close-up work. Please mark your calendar for the other two dates scheduled for this program year: January 25th and March 28th. Please email Linda Stroud or call/text 860-212-9616 for more information or to sign- up!
LITTLE LAMBS & IVY BAKE SALE RETURNS – On Sunday, October 27th, LLI will be holding our annual bake sale after all three services. Come by for some irresistible, sweet treats, created by our LLI staff. As a result of your generous donations last year, we were able to purchase several new items for our classrooms. LLI continues to grow and this year we hope to purchase the Naturally Playful Clubhouse Climber for our smaller playground. This would replace our current climbing piece that is showing signs of wear and tear. Our toddlers (two and three year olds) will be very excited if we can get this new equipment! We hope you will stop by and purchase something delicious or consider making a small donation. Thank you! Joanne Maurer
ALL SAINTS DAY– All Saints Day is coming up on Sunday, Nov. 3rd. If you would like someone recognized on this day, please let the office know as soon as possible.
SUM YUM TREATS FOR HALLOWEEN!!– We will be handing out treats here at SUM on Halloween, Thursday, October 31st. It’s a nice way to raise awareness of SUM and to offer some fun, warm fuzzies to the community! We will need some treats to hand out so if you can grab an extra bag of treats while shopping, we would appreciate it. You can drop them off in the labeled bin on the stage in Wesley Hall on Sunday, Oct. 20th and 27th or at the office during the week. We are also looking for some trunk-or-treat decorations to borrow so we don’t have to buy them. Please let us know if you have any decorations. If you would like to hand out treat bags on Halloween to exiting LLI families (4:30–6:00 p.m.) or drive-throughs from the community (5:00-7:00 p.m.), please contact either Dorothy Cowles or Deb Clifford. Thank You! Dorothy & Deb
