News From the Music Ministry
The Music Ministry has had a strong start to the 2019-2020 year. In acknowledgement of the needs of many of our SUM families, the Music Ministry has restructured some of our ensembles to make them more accessible to more people. These changes (as well as general music ministry news!) are detailed below:
Adult Choirs and Groups
The Chancel Choir is back in robes, singing in most Sunday services, and already preparing for the Thanksgiving ecumenical service. We always welcome new members, and hope to get a few new ones year! If you would like to join, or even just try out the choir, please contact Bridget Scarlato at or just come to one of our 7:20 p.m. Thursday rehearsals in the Choir Room.
The Chancel Ringers are having quite an exciting start to the fall. A September trip to Block Island to play a concert at Pastor Peter Preiser’s church was fun for all involved. We also welcomed three new members, all teens, into the group.
We have a new choral opportunity this year called “Choir Plus.” If you would like to sing some superb choral repertoire with our Chancel Choir but are unable to make the weekly rehearsal, you are welcome to join us in singing during the 10:30 service on the third Sunday of most months (and at the Thursday evening rehearsal before that service). Babysitting can be arranged for parents if needed; just let Bridget know in advance. The fall dates for Choir Plus are Thursdays/Sundays October 17/20, and November 14/17.
The Carillon group has changed our rehearsal times so that all Change Ringing rehearsals are now held on Wednesday evenings, and solo singing rehearsals on Thursdays. If you have any interest in playing the Carillon, please let Bridget, Jen Acheson, Bob Shea, or Laura Pence know.
As those who attend the 10:30 service have noticed, the “Halle, Halle” song of praise has been an exuberant addition to the worship service, especially with so many of our children “assisting” on percussive instruments. I think we can all agree that SUM is blessed to have so many young children to make a joyful noise!
The Children’s Choir will no longer be meeting after every 10:30 service. We will have a few opportunities for our young choral musicians throughout the year to rehearse after church for special services, but for the most part Bridget will be going into the Sunday School classrooms to do fun songs and games with the children instead of holding weekly practices after church.
This year’s Christmas Pageant will be on December 15 following the 10:30 service, at noon, rather than later in the afternoon. The SUM staff hope that this new time will allow more children to be involved and more people in the congregation to attend and support the children’s pageant. Parents and guardians, keep an eye out for more news on rehearsals, which will be starting soon!
For youth interested in ringing bells, we have opportunities with handbells and on the Foreman Carillon. Wesley Ringers, our intermediate level handbell ensemble, has already started rehearsing but still has room for new ringers. Anyone with previous experience ringing and/or with knowledge of music reading is welcome to join. We rehearse Friday nights at 5:45 p.m., with our fall session running September through December, and our spring session running March through May.
If you are interested in learning to ring bells but have no experience or knowledge of how to ring/read music, we have a group for you! In Celebration Ringers you will learn to read music and the basics of handbell ringing. This group is also suited for individuals and families with busy schedules, as we will only rehearse four Monday afternoons. Rehearsals start on October 21 and the group will play during one service in November. Please contact Bridget for more information about joining SUM’s Celebration Ringers.
And finally, youth carillon lessons will be offered during January and February on Friday evenings. Stay tuned for more info on this wonderful opportunity.
Thanks for making it through this long article! It is a blessing to be part of a church with so many musical opportunities available! As always, please contact Bridget to know more about our SUM ensembles.
