SUM Outreach: Two Opportunities To Help This Month
Socktober Returns to Simsbury
“Socktober” is a national sole-warming movement that gives everyone an easy and fun way to help those in need. Every night, an estimated 600,000 people are living on the streets without basic necessities – like socks. The number-one clothing item needed in shelters and by the homeless is socks, which people seldom donate.
Last year, SUM collected and donated just over 1000 pairs of socks. We want to beat that number this year. Look for the collection box on the stage in Wesley Hall starting October 1. (SUM has placed other collection boxes throughout Simsbury, such as at Starbucks, Fitzgerald’s, and the library.) Our recipients this year will be South Park, Streetfire, Gifts of Love, Build Kits, and the VA program in Newington. Please pick up some extra socks when you are out and about this month, and help us collect enough pairs to warm 1,000+ feet!
Make a Dinner for the ABC House
The ABC House is asking for volunteers to host a Sunday dinner for their residents. This is a great way to both to get involved with the ABC House and help assist with their food budget.

You would not be cooking for a crowd: There are only three students in residence this fall, plus a resident tutor and a resident director. Occasionally, a student’s family might visit and dinner for ten would be needed. Dinners should consist of a main course, a side dish, a salad or vegetable, and dessert.
SUM is signed up to bring dinner on Oct 13. If you would like to help us buy or prepare this meal, please reply to Debbie Dunn. If that date does not work or you, but you would like to help, the ABC calendar is open starting on November. 3. They are also happy to receive gift cards to local restaurants so they can order in.
