In Case You Missed It: Interfaith Forum - “What Do Our Neighbors Believe?” - Nov. 12, 2024
In case you missed it, the Interfaith Forum was a well-attended and very successful event, with representatives of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism sharing their beliefs and giving the audience an opportunity to learn about the differences and the many ways in which the three religions share their beliefs.
The event was a one-off based on one of the Adult Spiritual Growth books studied this fall: What do Our Neighbors Believe: Questions & Answers on Judaism, Christianity & Islam 2nd edition by Micah Greenstein & Kendra G Hotz & John Kaltner. The book was educational and illuminating, but the forum brought it all to life.
Pastor Gene Ott (Christianity), Aida Mansoor (Islam), and Rabbi Bekah Goldman (Judaism) provided informative, thoughtful, and engaging discourses on their individual beliefs and how the three religions coincide. Our shared belief in God was at the center of every discussion.
Ms. Mansoor told us the Qur’an devotes an entire chapter to Mary, the mother of Jesus, yet Jesus is considered only a prophet in Islam. Mary is also the only woman named in the Qur’an. Rabbi Bekah explained the importance of the Torah and its five books and how it is used in their services. Pastor Gene clarified some of the concepts of the various Christian religions and how they differ from Methodism.
Overall, it was an excellent opportunity to learn about other religions and watch how these three individuals interacted as they spoke of their beliefs and shared their passion for them. We are blessed to have such kind and generous people willing to share their time and beliefs. A special thank you goes out to Deacon Deb Clifford, the ultimate emcee for the event.
