SUM Plumbing Issues Update

As you may have heard, the church has had significant plumbing issues over the past six weeks. First, in late January, water was backing up into the basement because tree roots caused a blockage to the church’s south sewer line. Soon after that, water began backing up from the handicapped bathroom off Wesley Hall, which is tied into the church’s north sewer line. This occurred twice, and both times the plumbers thought the blockage was resolved. However, as the toilet was being replaced, water began backing up again. This time, a camera was sent through the line, and the source of the problem was discovered.
 
The sewer lines run under Hopmeadow and connect to the city main on the opposite side of the street. There is a hole in the north line, and it is located beneath the street. To further complicate the problem, the pipe is constructed from orangeburg, a composite of wood pulp fibers that gradually wears away over time.
 
The Trustees were considering two possible solutions. One option recommended by the city was to line the pipe. After the hardening process, the inside of the pipe would be similar to new PVC. This was the most cost-effective and least invasive option, but there are few companies who provide the service. The other option was to cut into the highway and run a new line. This option would have to be coordinated with both the city and state and is expensive.
 
We are pleased to report that crew members from Ohio and Florida are en route to Simsbury to repair the damaged sewer line. We look forward to an efficient and effective repair process and appreciate the crews’ willingness to travel. Thank you for your continued patience.
