Vacation Bible School - In Case You Missed It
It’s a wrap! In partnership with the First Church of Christ and under the new leadership of SUM’s Elizabeth Webber and Julie Cutler, another successful VBS is behind us. It may be behind us, but the good vibes are still with us - staff, volunteers, and kids alike! It was a time filled with learning, fun, and fellowship.
The theme was Super Heroes. Participants learned how they are all superheroes and are needed to spread the Good News everywhere. We were greeted by a Meercat mascot and Rev Kev (Reverend Kevin Weikel) from First Church each morning. We sang, danced, watched a video of the Bible Story of the day, and were excused in small groups with our faithful adult volunteers and counselors-in-training to a variety of activities for the remainder of the morning.
Each Bible Story had a Hero Hotline Tip for the day that was reinforced in each activity. There were interactive Bible stories, skits, games, snack time, and arts & crafts. We even had Simsbury heroes visit us – ambulance, police, and fire leaders each led an engaging presentation. I know you are wondering about those Hero Hotline Tips! Here they are:
· Heroes are called to… Follow Jesus!
· Heroes are called to… Help Others!
· Heroes are called to… Work Together!
· Heroes are called to…Listen to God!
· Heroes are called to… Show Grace!
Parents dropped off their children for a 9 AM start and picked them up at Noon. Parents also participated in an Ice Cream Social Thursday night to get a taste of what their children experienced throughout the week.
None of this would be possible without the dozens of adults and counselors-in-training volunteers preparing food in the kitchen, looking after assigned groups, directing skits, serving snacks, telling stories, guiding the arts & crafts, and so much more. Each of us got as much out of the experience as we gave – isn’t that always the case with God’s work?
