Safety

I'll be honest: when I first heard about the Safety Team, I thought about it all wrong. My mind went to the news and to horrible things that often happen far away but always seem too close. Those things feel too big for a small group of church volunteers to face. But as I thought about it more, I realized that the real importance of the safety team is that they are trained and willing to respond to the immediate problems at church.

Someone falls, and the safety team member helps them. Someone in crisis walks into the sanctuary, and the safety team sits with them until one of the clergy can talk with them. And yes, if a fire or other serious issue occurs, the Safety Team members will work together to get everyone to safety.

We don't talk about safety much, but I believe it is a cornerstone of the church experience. Everyone who walks into SUM should feel safe to be who they are, express their belief in God, and close their eyes as they reach out to God in prayer. That is why I joined the Safety Team. I hope that you will join us, too.

Click here if you missed the video I made to encourage people to join the Safety Team. I hope it offers both humor and inspiration.
