In Case You Missed It: Church Council Meeting - Sun. March 16
Nothing like a post-worship potluck to bring people together for church updates! On Sunday, March 16, that’s exactly what happened when we had our latest Church Council meeting at SUM!
Glenn Knight, SPR Chair, kicked us off with a brief video, as he joined us asynchronously while he recovers from shoulder surgery. He shared that now that DH has been appointed as our new pastor, SPR will get back to its regularly scheduled programming for the year. Cathy Marco has volunteered to lead the transition activities as DH, and his family joins us on July 1. Stay tuned for more details in that area.
Steve Langin, Trustees Chair, then provided a comprehensive update. Trustees have approximately 1.38 million in endowments, an amount bolstered by a recent gift from the estate of Gerry Berggren. This gift has now rejuvenated movement on the accessibility project. We anticipate holding another church council meeting within the month to share details and timelines regarding those efforts.
Jen Acheson, Finance Chair, then shared great news. Although projecting an almost $50,000 deficit initially, the church community has stepped up and stepped in, resulting in a mere $350 deficit at the end of 2024. Many thanks for a successful Stewardship campaign for 2025; we’re projecting a balanced budget for this year, too. Thank you for responding to the need. Jen also shared that she will be working with trustees to determine a protocol that will outline when trustees may be called upon to float the operating budget while tithes come in. This comes up from time to time, especially during the summer months when people are away, and aren’t necessarily giving on a weekly basis. Thank you for considering options to ensure consistent tithing. Reach out to Jen for more details.
Clergy then provided a comprehensive update, details of which you will find in the meeting minutes (link below). The Justice and Joy various ministries have continued their incredible work supporting missions of the grace and love of our Lord and Savior.
Pastor Gene gave updates relative to the Quad. Our District Superintendent, the Reverend Alpher Sylvester, is arranging for potential clergy to meet with North Canton and Copper Hill. Additionally, Deacon Deb and Pastor Gene’s last Sunday of worship will be June 22. Please mark your calendars!
Finally, Mike and Sue Sames gave a riveting update relative to refugee resettlement. Although threats loom, they continue these missions with dedication, passion, and fortitude. Please continue to keep this work in your prayers and reach out to the Sameses if you would like to help.
If you were not in attendance at the meeting, and even if you were, I encourage you to read through the minutes here. Please reach out to me, any council chairs, Deacon Deb, or Pastor Gene if needed.
May our holy habits deepen during this Lenten season, and may God continue to bless our work in His name.
-Sue Lemke, Church Council Chair
